Women’s basketball player Amy Plaggenhoef and men’s volleyball player Dominik Pineau have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 12, 2024.

Plaggenhoef, a fourth-year guard from Stratford, P.E.I., helped her team start the second half of the regular season with a doubleheader sweep on the road against the UNBSJ Seawolves. Holland won 70-49 and 75-50, with both wins putting the squad in a tie for the conference lead. Plaggenhoef was unstoppable across both games, recording 35 points, six steals, four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Her leadership, experience, and chemistry with teammates Lauren Armstrong and Alexa Rancourt have made her a force to be reckoned with all season and it showed this past weekend.

The women’s basketball Hurricanes are 8-2 and look to extend their winning streak to six games next weekend with a pair of home games at the McMillan Centre. They will face the STU Tommies on Saturday, Jan. 18 and Sunday, Jan. 19.

Pineau, a second-year left-side from Cornwall, P.E.I., had a strong start to the second half of the regular season, recording 12 kills and five digs in his team’s back-to-back straight-set victories against the Dalhousie Rams at the McMillan Centre. He has been a key factor in the team’s five-game winning streak since Dec. 2024 and has certainly had no sophomore slump.

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes are 8-4, tied for second in the conference, and four points back of first place. They will take the next weekend off and return to action the weekend after with a trip to Moncton, N.B. to take on the Crandall University Chargers on Saturday, Jan. 25.
