Women’s basketball player Vantaya Talbot and men’s basketball player Bryce Corless have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending Feb. 2, 2024.
Talbot, a rookie guard from Truro, N.S. earned Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Week and Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honours after helping her team to one victory against the Mount Allison Mounties this past weekend at the McMillan Centre. Holland rebounded from a close 65-59 loss on Saturday with a 71-52 win on Sunday. Talbot recorded 12 points, a 5-for-8 field-goal record, a 1-for-2 three-point record, a 1-for-2 free-throw record, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and three steals across two games.
The women’s basketball Hurricanes are currently 12-4 and tied for the conference lead with the MSVU Mystics. With two games remaining on their regular season campaign compared to MSVU’s three, their final games which are next weekend on the road against the UKC Blue Devils, it will be crucial in Holland’s chase for the regular season championship and their push toward the 2025 ACAA Basketball Championships.

Corless, a fifth-year guard from Quispamsis, N.B., earned Hurricanes Male Athlete of the Week honours for the second time this season and Hurricanes Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honours for the third time. This past weekend, he helped his team record two nail-biting wins against the Mount Allison Mounties at the McMillan Centre. His 54 points across both games propelled him to the top of the conference and he also recorded a 18-for-34 field-goal record, 4-for-12 three-point record, 14-for-18 free-throw record, 19 rebounds, four assists.
The men’s basketball Hurricanes are on a high at the right time with the 2025 ACAA Basketball Championships just over three weeks away, as they carry an 11-5 record, a six-game winning streak, and a four-point second-place advantage into their final two regular season games next weekend. They will visit Halifax, N.S. to challenge the UKC Blue Devils in a doubleheader.
