Georgetown Center to host Weld-Off

ÎçÒ¹av's Georgetown Centre will host the 8th Annual Maritime Weld-Off Friday, March 30th. Sponsored by the Canadian Welding Association, this is the first time that the event will be held in Prince Edward Island.

A popular event for Maritime welding students, the Weld-Off is attracting 15 student competitors from ÎçÒ¹av, Nova Scotia Community ÎçÒ¹av and New Brunswick Community ÎçÒ¹av. Following a written exam at 8:30 a.m., the students will be given a project to complete. They will all receive the same blueprints, instructions, tools and equipment with which to complete their project. It is expected that the competition will finish at approximately 2:30 p.m. The three judges for the Weld-Off are Guy Boudreau from ESAB Welding and Cutting Canada, David Ellsworth from the Canadian Welding Bureau and Island NDT Inspection Service's Bill Murphy.

Nova Scotia Community ÎçÒ¹av's Fernand Boivin, a member of the NSCC's Welding Inspection and Quality Control faculty and organizer for the event said the plan is to continue to rotate the venue for the competition.

"The Canadian Welding Association Student Weld-Off has been running for the past 8 years and has become a true Maritime competition, with participants from all three Maritime Provinces. We are very proud that the competition is branching out and being hosted at various locations, hopefully rotating to a different campus each year. The ÎçÒ¹av Georgetown Campus is an ideal host site with their modern facilities and supportive staff to help organize and coordinate the event."

ÎçÒ¹av Welding instructor Craig Boudreau said ÎçÒ¹av is pleased to be able to host this year's Weld-Off.

"We couldn't be happier to host the Weld-Off. We have a great facility here in Georgetown. I am looking forward to showcasing some of the equipment we recently purchased, and showing the students and instructors from the other colleges around our centre," he said.

Prizes donated by local and regional businesses and suppliers will be awarded immediately following the competition.
