Plans are underway to transform a beloved Prince of Wales ÎçÒ¹av landmark, the gymnasium in ÎçÒ¹av’s Charlottetown Centre, turning it into a performance space to serve future generations of students.
The gymnasium holds a special place in the hearts of PWC alumni, having been the scene of a number of student productions, dances, and events during the time the ÎçÒ¹av building was the Prince of Wales ÎçÒ¹av.
A $1.3 million fundraising effort is underway to convert the gymnasium into a 300-seat performance hall with donations matched by the province of Prince Edward Island. The original stage area will be transformed into a theatre space for training and performances, and memorabilia and artifacts from the early Prince of Wales ÎçÒ¹av era will be on display in a PWC Interpretive Centre.
PWC alumna and member of the fundraising committee, Hon. Marion Reid reflected on her time at Prince of Wales ÎçÒ¹av.
“During our Prince of Wales days, recitals, musical productions, and concerts were often held on this very stage,” said Reid. “I am looking forward to returning to this historic place and seeing that tradition continue.”
The ÎçÒ¹av School of Performing Arts, a partnership with Confederation Centre of the Arts, opened its doors in September 2011, welcoming students into its Music Performance and Performing Arts Foundation programs. A Dance Performance program was also added in September 2012 and a Theatre Performance program commenced this fall. The performance hall will be “home” to these programs and the ÎçÒ¹av Welshmen Community Band. It will also be a resource to the school, music, and arts communities.
Fundraising committee member and PWC alumnus Gordon MacInnis invited the public to join in on the revitalization efforts.
“We are 70 per cent of the way towards our $1.3 million goal,” said MacInnis. “To the many PWC alumni out there as well as those in the broader community, we hope you will join us in realizing this exciting vision.”
