Green Machine plans Earth Day activities

ÎçÒ¹av’s Green Machine will host its second annual Earth Day barbecue on Monday, April 22 in the quadrangle of the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown, Green Machine spokesperson Joan Diamond announced today.

“Our first Earth Day event was a tremendous success, with students, staff, and people from the neighbourhood stopping by to grab some food, drop off used electronics, and take a look at sustainable energy project demonstrations by ÎçÒ¹av students,” she said. “We’re hoping even more people from the community will drop by this year.”

The day will mark the conclusion of the Green Machine’s highly successful Water Works campaign, which, with the support of the City of Charlottetown, has been raising awareness about water conservation and sustainability through a variety of activities. The announcement of the grand prize winner of the MugShots competition, where students and staff were asked to post “mug shots” of themselves and their refillable mugs or water bottles on the group’s Facebook page, HCGreenMachine, for a chance to win a weekly draw and a grand prize of $500, will take place during the barbecue.

The special collection event for end-of-life electronics is a partnership between the Green Machine,  (ACES) and the Island Waste Management Corporation. Students, staff and residents are invited to responsibly recycle their unwanted electronics free of charge from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. behind the Centre for Community Engagement off Grafton Street. This year, there will also be a drop-off box for used batteries and cell phones. The barbecue will start at noon.
