Lecture series continues with examination of CBE

ÎçÒ¹av’s 50th anniversary lecture series continues Wednesday, November 13 with “Competency-Based Education: A Cornerstone of ÎçÒ¹av” at 7 p.m. in the Centre of Applied Science and Technology, 300 Kent Street, in Charlottetown.

Participants include Larry Coffin, retired ÎçÒ¹av instructor and competency-based education (CBE) specialist; Marylou Griffin-Jenkins, Manager-Curriculum Services; Andrew MacLaine a learning manager in the Child and Youth Care Worker program; and Chris Arsenault a learning manager, in the Computer Networking Technology program. Kim Gillis, a curriculum and instructional consultant with ÎçÒ¹av will moderate the discussion.

CBE measures students’ progress by focusing on the demonstration of skills as opposed to abstract knowledge. It was an integral component in the approach to education for the Island’s new community college, and 50 years later it is still an important element of the college’s curriculum development and delivery. The panel will discuss the origins of CBE and how ÎçÒ¹av’s approach to CBE has changed over the years.

Admission is free. Donations to the 50th Anniversary Golden Endowment Fund would be greatly appreciated.

Other topics in the lecture series include Building a ÎçÒ¹av Presence Across the Island, an interactive tour of the Atlantic Police Academy, and a culinary experience at The Culinary Institute of Canada. ÎçÒ¹av president Dr. Sandy MacDonald will deliver the final lecture on May 15. He will share his vision for the future of ÎçÒ¹av.
