Job Description

Northumberland Ferries Limited and Bay Ferries Limited, regional leaders in the passenger transportation industry, are seeking an experienced Payroll Administrator. This year-round, full-time, excluded position is primarily located in Charlottetown, PEI, with occasional travel to our ships and terminals in PEI, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Payroll Administrator is responsible for monitoring corporate adherence to applicable payroll legislation and collective agreements, financial accounting, and reporting, and
ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with operational front-line leadership to ensure accurate and timely processing of the bi-weekly payroll, i.e. calculating amounts to be paid/deducted, including hours, vacation, and taxable benefits, and liaising with payroll provider (Payworks) to ensure payroll payments/deductions are completed correctly; proactively/immediately addressing all management payroll inquiries and issues; implementing salary increases, bonuses, commissions, etc. as instructed.
  • Administer employee benefits
  • Administer and process pension plan contributions, preparing forms such as Records of Employment, reconciling statutory remittances to Government agencies, income tax forms, and remittances, all year-end Government
    requirements (e.g., T4s), processing payables for benefit providers, and managing WCB accounts.
  • Ensure accurate time entries for Medical Leave with Pay, Paid Personal Leave and Unpaid Personal Leave.
  • Work closely with People & Culture to ensure smooth onboarding and offboarding of employees.
  • Other duties, as required.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2-4 years’ experience administering payroll in a small to medium-sized organization.
  • Canadian Payroll Association diploma, or related training.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Experience with month-end and year-end procedures.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, high level of discretion and confidentiality, highly organized and deadline-orientated, great attention to detail, strong analytical skills

WORKING CONDITIONS
The workplace is the head office in Charlottetown. The hours for this position are generally from 8am to 4pm; however, as an essential industry that operates seven days per week, evening and weekend work will sometimes be required. Some travel to vessels, terminals and other company locations will also be required.
